Daisuke Nishina was born the second son of Nishina Yukihiro in the Onho Era (1161-1162) in Shinshu near to the Azumio province. His father, who was killed at a battle called 'Awaza no Kassan' was a Samurai under Kiso Yoshinaka who was a cousin of Minamoto Yoshitsune and Minamato Yoryone ( the first hereditary Shogun of Japan). According to legend Daisuke Nishima was on the losing side of a battle, heavily wounded he fled to the Togakure region it is here that he came across Kagakure Doshi, a Soke of Hakuun Ryu Ninjutsu.

togakure5 Hakuun Ryu was founded by Garyu Doshi. The school was said to contain the teachings of the use of four demons (Fire, Shadow, Earth and wind). Garyu had three students, Iga Heinai Yasykiyo, Hashiryu Nyudo and Izumu Kanja Yoshiteru. Izumu Kanja Yoshiteru is credited as being the founder of both Shinden Fudo Ryu and Kukishinden Ryu . Hakuun Doshi the teacher of Kagakure Doshi , was taught the Hakuun Ryu by Kimon Heibei. It is said that Hakuun Doshi was the organiser of the Hakuun Ryu, and it is from him that the school gets it's name.

Kagakure Doshi had two students, Daisuke Nishima (Togakure ) and Shima Minamoto. Shima Minamoto of Ise was of the Kosho rank and fought for the Minamoto clan against the Taira family at the age of sixteen under the employ of Kiso Yoshiake. He was seriously wounded at the battle at Awazu and escaped to the Iga province at the request of Kiso where he met and was cared for by Kagagure Doshi who also taught him the Hakuun Ryu Happo Hiken which had early forms of Jojutsu, Taijutsu, Sojutsu, Koppo, Naginata, Muto and Shurikenjutsu. Another version says that Shima was found by Kagakure Doshi who carried him on his back to a hut in Iga. On his death Kagakure Doshi requested that Daisuke Nishina continue the care and teaching of Shima.

togakure3Daisuke Nishima combined the teachings of Hakuun Ryu Ninjutsu with his Shugendo religion to formulate a system that would become the Togakure Ryu. To celebrate this he changed his name to Daisuke Togakure. Daisuke was said to have a son called Rokosuke who was said to be his first student. It is not known why Daisuke did not appoint his son as the next soke and it is not recorded what happened to him. Shima Minamaoto was made the next Soke and changed his name to Diasuke Togakure II out of respect for his teacher.

Shima Minamoto passed the school onto Goro Togakure, some sources say that Goro was the son of Shima. It is said that Goro formulated the Ryu as we think of it today. Goro taught Kosanta Togakure, (a.k.a Kuunra Kotaro Noburoshi) who formulated the Santo Tonko no jutsu 12 techniques fore beginning students.

The School was said to have been taught by the Hattori family of the Kishu clan as part of the Hattori Ryu in the 1600's.The Hattori Ryu was formed by Hanzo Hattori. He was born in 1541 the son of Hattori Yasunaga in the province of Iga. He gained the favour of Tokugawa Ieyasu when he acted as a guide through the Iga region and was later to become military advisor to Ieyasu when he became Shogun. It is said that Hattori died in 1596 age 55 when fighting the Ninja of Fuma Ryu, a clan who specialized in water tactics. It is said that Hanzo Hattori and his men chased the Fuma Ninja out to sea in small boats; however the Fuma Ninja swam underneath the boats of Hattori and disabled his rudder. The men under Hattori were said to have jumped overboard only to find that oil had been poured into the sea .The oil was lit by the Fuma clan and Hanzo and his men burned to death.
